ABOUT

Josie Munroe, LMFT

She/Her, Cat Lover, Puzzle Enthusiast, Magic Seeker

eating disorder therapist

"Josie has a presence that is indescribable. She pushed me to face difficult emotions and uncover destructive thoughts that I did not even realize were there. All the while, she made me feel safer and more comfortable than I ever have in a therapeutic relationship. Josie's nurturing and holistic practice was truly the catalyst I needed to change my life."

You deserve a therapist who's a great fit. Rather than just sharing my credentials, I want to share myself. (But if you really want to know about that stuff, click here.)

Why I Do What I Do

My own personal struggles are what help me relate so deeply with my clients. Healing from my own eating disorder and traumas were profoundly important chapters in my life. I know how scary it can be to reach out when you're struggling and to face the hopelessness that whispers, "This will never get better." But it does. And that's why I do the work I do today. I can and will hold hope for you when you've all but lost it.

Helping People Gives My Life Meaning

Being a therapist is an honor. Empowering my clients and celebrating their wins is one of the most rewarding things about my work. I see the profound impact that systems of oppression, outdated standards, and negative stories have on individuals and communities. And our world desperately needs more empowered, self-accepting humans to join the fight for equality and justice.

Session is Your Safe Space

I strive to create safety within each session and work to ensure that the therapeutic process is collaborative and unique to you. With compassion and curiosity, I offer you an encouraging environment where you can check in with yourself and feel what you need to feel. You're invited to fall apart with me (tears, f-bombs, and more) and I'll be there with the tools and support to help you fall back together.

My Philosophies

  • I believe you are the expert on you and your experiences.
  • I believe sensitivity is a wonderful gift.
  • I believe that change is possible for everyone.
  • I believe that full recovery from an eating disorder is real.
  • I believe in Health At Every Size.
  • I believe that despite your pain, you are an incredible, powerful human.
  • I believe that you are inherently worthy of love and care, no matter what.
  • I believe that we can do hard things like go to therapy and that we can live better for it.
  • I believe that loving and accepting ourselves just as we are is the greatest act of courage.
  • I believe that we can dispel shame when we share our story with an empathetic listener.

My Therapy Style

  • I'm a human first and therapist second. I have feelings and thoughts and use them when appropriate to benefit your work and our relationship.
  • I'm warm and engaging. I don't expect you to talk through the whole session, but I'm also not afraid to be with you in silence when that feels important.
  • I'm a nerd and am known to quote The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter in sessions.
  • I don't mind sharing about myself and my own experiences when it can be useful for your process and not harmful.
  • I'm creative and intuitive and use a variety of techniques for therapy that's as unique as you are.
  • I'm compassionate and empathetic, but once we've built rapport, I'll lovingly call you out on any bullshiz as needed!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does online therapy work?

Online sessions (telehealth) are a great fit for many people, but not everybody. I recommend that potential clients consider the following: Do you have a private space for sessions where you can freely talk? Do you have a reliable internet connection? If so, then let's give it a try! If you find that online therapy isn't your jam, it's ok. I'm happy to try and help you find a better fit.

The benefits of online therapy are numerous. For some, it's the only option - and therapy is only effective if it happens! Other benefits include:

    • Clients may feel safer in their own environment and more willing to work through difficult traumas.
    • Clients who are socially anxious may find they feel more comfortable online.
    • With permission, a client's environment can become part of the therapeutic process (e.g. support with meals and other activities of daily living, assessing mood and functioning via space, etc.).
    • Less time constraints due to the absence of travel time.
  • How do I pay?

I use a secure credit card processing system built just for therapists called Ivy Pay. There's nothing for you to download and you only need to enter your card information once. I'll help you get set up at the end of your first session. It just takes a minute or two and unless you need to update your card in the future, you don't have to worry about it again!

  • What is your fee, and do you take insurance?

Standard 50-min sessions are $200. I am not in-network with insurance companies but can provide a monthly superbill for you to submit for potential reimbursement. I  have a 24-hour cancelation policy and charge your full session fee for missed sessions (no-shows) and any cancelations with less than 24-hour notice.

  • Why California and Vermont?

Seems random, doesn't it? I started my private practice in the Los Angeles area where I lived for many years. Recently I relocated to Vermont and obtained my license here. I still love my Californians though, so I'm maintaining a current license there as well.

  • Do you work with other issues?

While I have my specialties, I am also able to provide effective treatment for more general issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, etc. During our consult call, I'll ask you to share a bit about what you're dealing with and if it's something I don't have much experience with, I'll let you know. You deserve a therapist who is a great fit.
